A lesson in 3-act plot structure in picture books BLOG>
WHY and How
This blog is aimed at:
those who love children's literature and want some good-read tips, and at
those who are learning to write for kids and might want some study tips.
I've reviewed texts that have taught me something valuable about the craft of writing for children, as I'm working on a picture book portfolio and a couple of middle grade texts.
Over the years I’ve found the second best way* to learn to write was to study books I admired– to read as a writer, in creative writing teaching parlance. And that's what I do with the books on this kid lit. review site. I don't blog solely about the latest offerings out there (many excellent bloggers are doing just that, e.g. My Shelves are Full,Book Murmuration, Mamma Filz, Bookwagon.) I also delve into my golden oldies stack, i.e. books that my children and I loved all the gloss off through re-readings, or the current ones I most enjoying sharing with my granddaughters.
I appreciate books that contain a treat for the adult reader too so expect applause for sly humour, irony and visual genius.
I love talking children's books so please get in touch with comments and even suggestions for review.
*The 1st best way is to teach [writing.] Seneca said something like that first.
