DISCUSSION POINTS, Koba series

Salt & Honey. Koba Book 1

  • Many readers remark on the strong sense of place in this novel. Which descriptions evoked Africa most vividly for you?
  • Consider what ‘Salt’ and ‘Honey’ might symbolize in the story.
  • Which scene will linger longest in your mind after reading this novel?
  • ‘The character of Marta is intriguing. Her liberal attitude is one that we identify with but her decision to take Koba to the farm (but not to live with them) and not to return her to her people is a difficult one to contemplate.’ Discuss Marta’s actions in the light of her character and circumstances.
  • There is one character in Salt & Honey who from the outset sees Koba as a person rather than a symbol. Who is this and when does this character‘s attitude become gratifyingly obvious to the reader?
  • How did you feel about the inclusion of foreign words in the text? And what about the inclusion of background notes?
  • This is not a cosy read, but is it a worthwhile one? Consider your takeaway from it.

Kalahari Passage. Koba book 2

  • How do you think Koba’s trauma mainfests in this story?
  • In what ways does Koba struggle to fit in with her former  people, the Ju|’hoansi Bushmen?
  • Which scene will linger in your mind longest, after reading this novel?
  • Do you feel you  learned anything  from reading this novel? If so, what?
  • Consider the statement that  Apartheid South Africa was  a traumatic experience for all who lived there through those years, even the aggressors/ those in power/ the Afrikaners.
  • What do you think we could usefully learn from the Ju|’hoan  people?
  • What did you think of the cliff hanger ending of Koba book 2?
